3 Questions to Ask Your Wedding DJ

When it comes to planning your wedding there are so many things to plan and think about.  Picking out the right vendors is critical to getting your dream wedding right.  Since music is SUCH an essential part of your wedding reception, choosing the right wedding DJ is crucial.  Below are my top three questions to ask your prospective wedding DJ before booking them.

1. What's Your MC Style?

So usually, your wedding DJ is also the designated MC for your evening.  As the MC your wedding DJ will be making all necessary announcements such as “ladies and gentlemen your first course is now being served” to “please help me welcome for the very first time as husband and wife…”.  You get my drift.

That said, I’m sure you have all been to that wedding where those simple necessary announcements went terribly wrong.  Have you ever felt like you were being harassed by the DJ on the dance floor?  One of our clients told me that they were at a wedding where the DJ was screaming at the bride to get on the dance floor when she was talking to her guests.  If you ask me that is NOT the way I would want to be treated at my own wedding.  That’s why asking your DJ what their MC style is a great way to avoid this nightmare happening on your special day.

2. What's Your Mixing Style?

So this question might seem obvious or not so obvious but is SUPER important when picking your wedding DJ.  Furthermore, if your DJ can’t answer this question then keep it moving since this is a sure sign your DJ is not very experienced.

Here at TCM DJ Events our DJs all have nightclub experience where they have catered to niche parties.  For instance, I played underground house parties for most of my career.  So my mixing style is one where I blend my records and ride the mix for a bit.  I also let my songs play out for a majority of the duration.

If you hire a hip hop DJ who used to do mainly battle gigs then their style will incorporate a lot more scratching.   They may also  only let songs play out for 30 to 45 seconds before switching out to the next song.  There is no right or wrong, but you may have a preference to the mixing style the DJ implements.

3. How Well Can You Read A Room?

Now this question is CRUCIAL to your wedding reception being an AMAZING dance floor experience.  You see, having a seasoned DJ who can read the room is the difference between some people dancing and EVERYONE dancing on your wedding day.

So when you ask your prospective wedding DJ how well they can read a room, listen carefully.  They should then answer “HOW” they do this.  If they just say, I do great at this!  Keep it moving.  That means they aren’t even sure what you are asking them and they probably just play the same sets that they know they can do well.  You need a DJ who can vibe out your crowd and take you on that dance floor journey that will have your guests talking about it for years to come.
